Reading, Writing

Ratings are: (A), (B), (C), (D), (F) for Aced, Brag-able, Competent, Dud or Foul:

"Fire," by Kristin Cashore (A), Excellent imagination, good description and characterization.

"Liar," by Justine Larbalestier (B), Well written, but unclear as to which interpretation of the book is real. This does not meet Tolkein's criteria for integrity in fiction (see his essay On Fairy Stories.) The reality of the fiction is unclear to the reader. At least this author does not rip the heart out of the reader at the end like Paul Gallico did with "The Abandoned," (It was all just a dream, sucker).

I read Parts of:

"On Writing," by Stephen King (A), This is a must-read, for writers.

"Talking to Dragons," by Patricia C. Wrede (B), humorous fantasy.

"Missing You," by Meg Cabot (B), happy ending to the 1-800-Where-Are-You series.

"Dashing Through the Snow," by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark (C), Mostly competent writing, with too many main characters.

Written this week:

"County Rte. 17," 1123 word story (MCMB, in short stories & essays).

"Softly Now," end to 195 word story (this blog)

Current word count: 25000 (for 2009 NANO, "Life Beyond Life")
